Saturday night.....feeling overwhelmed by fatigue, I decided to watch CAROL, anyway...as I late snack on a roasted chile relleno....but my mind slipped into introspective mode with every scene change, as images of Edward Hopper's solitary women, garbed in department store couture, alternated with the ellipsis of pared down internal dialogues from my cerebral chambers, longing for slumber and release from mundane associative irrelevances.....Within minutes of the films opening scene, I was transported to parallel cinematic worlds..... released like invisible pheromones from my memory banks.......images from Wim Wenders' The American Friend, and then...to images of soft-focus saturation, like stills from Volker Schlondorff's video diary, or Fassbinder's QUERELLE.......Already, ten minutes into Todd Haynes film, I am transported to the worlds of Patricia Highsmith and the conjuring of her words and images....to Tom Ripley viewing his images in a broken mirror and a chain-smoking Meredith Logue, unaware of the thoughts behind others' eyes.....My index finger, finding the "off" button, relays the silence of the cool evening as I slip beneath the faux-fur comforter to dwell in slumberland with the rarebit fiends....
